The West Mamprusi Municipal assembly has announced its intention to embark on a vigorous campaign against child marriage and teenage pregnancy which are on the rise in the area.
As part of the campaign, the assembly will be organizing durbars of chiefs to sensitize the communities on the need to appreciate their enormity on the lives of young girls.
Mr. Abu Mohammed, the municipal chief executive disclosed this to Zaa news after NORSAAC’s Head of Programs and Policy, Hajia Hafsah Sey Sumani and the Project officer at Gender and Governance, Ms. Nancy Yiri called on him to officially inform him about a project, ‘Promoting Adolescent Safe Space (PASS), they are piloting in five communities within the municipality.
The team held an inception meeting with health officers at the Municipal health directorate, the Ghana Education Service, NCCE, CHRAJ, assembly members and the five beneficiary community representatives in Walewale, to explain the aims and objectives of the PASS) project to stakeholders and enable them have clear minds throughout the implementation process.
The UNICEF- supported project is targeting six districts in the North Eastern, Savannah and Northern regions. Five communities in the West Mamprusi Municipality are to benefit from the PASS project.
The MCE, who was excited about the project, corroborated with the social welfare and community development on the alarming rate of teenage pregnancy.
He assured them of his support to ensure the successful implementation of the project, adding that Muslim gatherings will also be added to their sensitization campaign against teenage pregnancy and child marriage in the area.
