Gas explsion kills one person in Tamale

One person was killed and an unspecified number injured in a gas explosion on Wednesday at the Lamashegu industrial area in the northern regional capital-Tamale, police authorities said.

Authorities said the explosion occurred at the light industrial areas opposite the GHACEM regional depot around 11:45 am Wednesday and destroyed properties worth millions of cedis and halted business activities in the area.

The deceased who is said to be a welder was working on a tractor when the explosion occurred. The injured were reportedly rushed to the hospital for treatment.

The Ghana Fire National Service which responded to the explosion helped to bring it under control and also assisted in retrieving some properties belonging to neighbouring stores. The cause of the explosion has not been determined. The Fire Service will conduct an investigation.

An eye witness who spoke to Zaa News noted that the place is gutted by fire every year. The explosion was so loud it scared them, they added. One Abubakar Yussif, an eye witness called on the Environment Protection Agency to investigate the rampant fire out breaks in the area.
