PRESS CONFERENCE ORGANIZED BY THE ABUDU YOUTH ON THE
STATE OF AFFAIRS OF THE DAGBON CHIEFTAINCY DISPUTE. A
STATEMENT READ BY MUMUNIYUSSIFON THE2ND AUGUST 2018 AT
YENDI.
Ladies and Gentlemen of the press,we the Abudu Youth of Yendi would
first of all like to thank you for  attending our press conference.
Our statement is occasioned by recent unpleasant happenings that need
serious attention by well-meaning Ghanaians,and particularly chiefs,elders
and elites of Dagbon.
It is a fact that peace, and particularly enduring peace,has eluded Dagbon
since the uncustomary removal of Na Mahamadu Abdulai IV in 1974 by a
Military Decree under Gen.I.K.Acheampong.  It is also a fact that the
Otumfuo-led Committee of Eminent Kings in our peace process all this
while has left customs and traditions,law and common sense,and
particularly the absolute truth,and has stuck to lies,evils,and machinations
by chieftaincy contractors and self-seeking greedy undesirable elements
especially from the Andani family. It is equally a fact that the Supreme
Court’s ruling of December 1986 on the Dagbon Chieftaincy dispute,
coupled with the Memorandum of Agreement emanating from the Dagbon
Reconciliation Committee in August 1987 have the potential to offer
Dagbon enduring peace.Unfortunately,the Committee of Eminent Chiefs
on the Dagbon crisis has by their omissions and commissions jettisoned
these legally binding documents and thrown their mediation off bearing.
What is more,their own Road map to Peace has suffered breaches under
their supervision. It is no wonder we are in this mess that has run fifteen
years and we still can’t find an end to it.

Torefreshourmemory,NaMahamaduAbdulaiIVwasproperlyenskinned
andhewastheONLYYaNawhoruledDagbonfrom 1969to1974.Naa
MahamaduAbdulai’sremovalfrom officeisthemostcruelviolationof
Dagboncustom.Itis,indeed,responsibleforallthechieftaincyrelated
unrestsintheentirekingdom.Referencetothisomeninthehistoryof
Dagboncanbemadetopage29ofthe1930DagbonConstitutionwhere
weread“AllreferencestothisisTabu;anyallusionmadeappearedto
shockthesubordinatechiefsandelderssoprofoundlythatitwasdeemed
inadvisable to bring up the subject…”.The law-abiding late king,Na
MahamaduAbdulaiIV,tookthemattertothecourtsystemtoseekredress
againsttheinjusticedonehim andthefamily.AnAccraAppealsCourt
whichheardthecaserejectedthegroundsforhisremovalfrom thethrone
andorderedthatheshouldbereinstatedasYaNa.However,thedefendant
inthecase,thelateNaYakubuIItookthecasetotheSupremeCourtfor
review.The Supreme Courtruled thathaving regard to the Dagbon
ConstitutionthatdeskinmentisunknowninDagbon,allpersonswhohave
everoccupiedtheNamofYendishallwithoutregardtohowtheyceasedto
beYaNaberegardedasformerYaNas.Consequently,theirsonsdo
qualifyforappointmenttothegateskinsofSavelugu,KaragaandMion.A
memorandum signedbyrepresentativesfrom bothAbuduandAndani
families,including the late Ya Na Yakubu Andani,reaffirmed their
commitmenttotherulingoftheSupremeCourtthat“OnthedeathofExYa
NaMahamaduAbdulaiIV,heshouldbeaccordedthefullfuneralritesofa
YaNainthelightoftheSupremeCourt’sRulingof17thDecember1986.
TheRoadmaptoPeacereaffirmedthisunavoidableaspectoftheSupreme
Court Ruling and representatives of both gates appended their signatures at the tosameastruth,legalandasolutiontotheDagboncrisis.Whyhasthe
RoadmaptoPeacefailedtoupholdthesecourttruthsandlegalities?Are
theynomorerelevant?
Ladiesandgentlemenofthepress,whyhavewedancedbackandforthall
thiswhile?Afterthe2002skirmishesbetweenthetwofactions,thethen
PresidentJ.A.Kuffuorformed a Committee ofEminentKings.The
Committeehasallthelegaldocumentstoguidethem infindinglasting
solutiontoDagbon.ButthebigquestiontoaskiswhyhastheCommittee
chosentoreinventthewheelinsteadtoimplementingalegaldocument
whichwasagreedbybothparties?Acarefulstudyoftheentiremediation
processconfirmstousthateithertheOtumfuo-ledCommitteehasbeen
bribedfromthewordgoortheyhavewoefullyfailedtofindsolutionstothe
crisis;ieperform funeralsofthetwooverlordsandfindnextYaNafor
Dagbon.TheAbuduYouthhavecometothepainfulconclusionthatwe
wouldhavebeenbetteroffiftheCommitteehadnotbeensetupinthefirst
place.ThisCommitteeonlysupervisedtheinstallationoftheRegentofNa
YakubuAndanifor15yearsofmediation.TheCommitteehassupervised
theviolationofalmostallthemajorclausesandtermsofreferencesin
theirownRoadmaptoPeaceincludingtheenskinmentoftheso-called
KugaNa,amongothers.
Ladiesandgentlemenofthepress,nobody,andIrepeatnobody,noteven
thePresidentisabovethelaw.Whyhaveweallowedtheintransigenceand
lackofcooperationoftheAndanifamily,particularlyandoflatethe
KampakuyaNa’sfaction,todragthewholeofDagbonandthenationto
thisdisgracefulabyss?FULLFUNERALRITESFORNA MAHAMADU is
simple,legal,customaryandcommonsense,andanendtothecrisisof
Dagbon. Is the Kampakuya Na who is still intransigent saying to us that his father,the late YaNaYakubu Andani was naïve about the Dagbon customs
and signed a deal which is notinconsonance with the

Dagbon customs?Is
hesayingtousthattheYooNaaandalltheeldersonhissideareunwiseto
haveacceptedtocooperatewiththepeaceprocess?Wewanthim tostop
hismadnessimmediately.NoAndaniorgroupofAndaniscanstopthe
FUNERALOFNAMAHAMADUABDULAIIVfrom beingperformedatthe
GBEWAPALACE.
Ladiesandgentlemenofthepress,on7thdayofJuly2018,wewokeupto
asadaudiorecordingemanatingfrom theso-calledKugaNawhothe
Otumfuoregardsasneutralinthepeacemediationprocess.Theso-called
KugaNaorPastorAbdullaireferredtoNaMahammaduIVbyhisordinary
name.ThederogatoryremarksmadeinthatrecordingagainsttheAbudu
familyandparticularlyNaaMahamaduhaveincensedthefamilyand
generatedachainofremarksandcounterremarkssodistastefulthatthey
are sure early warning signals forimpending danger.The unlawful
enskinmentofPastorAbdulai,notwithstanding,heisacharactervoidof
credibilityforthatoffice.Tobecharitabletohim,heistheepitomeof
confusionandanembodimentofambivalenceofthehighestorder.He
renegadedfrom Islam toChristianity,fortheobviousattractionsthathe
stoodatthetimeforthepurpose.HewastrainedbytheChurchasaPastor
afterhisconversion.
OnhissocalledascenttotheKugathrone,hestillinsistedoncarryingout
thepastoralrole;certainlyforthefinancialattractions.Goodenough,the
churchdeclinedthatrequest.Traditionally,theKugaNaaasidebeingthe
chiefadministratorattheYaNaa’scourt,isalsotheYaNaa’sChief
TraditionalPriest.Hehasthedutyofofferingsacrificetothedeitiesofthe
kingdom and the predecessors of the YaNaa.

To allintentsand purposes,anybodywho can playgameswith the
AlmightyHimselfintheseloftyissuescanbehighlydangerousasa
memberofanysociety.Havehim inleadershipandtheshipwreckis
imminent.Hisclaim astheSeniorElderoftheDagbonState,andhis
falsehoodsaboutDagboncustoms,therefore,shouldnotcometoanyone
asasurprise.
WehavereceivedsomereportsthattomorrowFriday,3rdofAugust2018,
the Kuga Na may wantto do the unthinkable thing ofSECRETLY
ATTEMPTINGTOENSKINTHEKAMPAKUYANAASOVERLORDOFTHE
DAGBONKINGDOM.Ifthegovernment,theMUSEC,andtheREGSECwould
allowthemaccesstotheRoyalMausoleumhenceoff,theyshouldn’tblame
theAbudusforwhatwehaveequallyplannedtodotocontainthesituation.
MayGodforbidthebloodthatwouldshedonthatday.
Ladiesandgentlemenofthepress,wewantGhanaianstoknowthat,we
theAbuduYouthandtheAbuduFamilyhavereceivedrumoursfilteringin
from someKonkombasources.SourcessuggestthattheKampakuyaNa
mightstrikewhenanattemptismadetorenovatetheoldGbewaPalaceor
whentheAbudusaregrantedoccupancy.OnSaturday,21stJuly2018,the
KampakuyaNaametwithKonkombachiefsfrom theentireNorthern
RegionattheTemporaryPalace.AmuchsmallernumberofKonkomba
chiefsbetweentwentytotwentyfivemetwithhim atthesamevenuethe
nextday,ieSunday22ndJuly2018.Rumoursnowfilteringinsuggestthat
theywerelobbiedtorallybehindhim tocausemayhem byattacking
AbudusinDagombaCommunitiesoutsideYendi.Wewantthesecurityand
thegoodpeopleofthiscountrytoknowthatifheisconveningmeetings
withKonkombasatthiscrucialhouritiseyebrowraising.Andifitgoes
beyond those living within the kingdom,it is further evidence of something fishy.

otheKampakuyaNaandthoseKonkombachiefswhomayhave
boughtintohisschemes,wesaywehavetakennote.Allwesayisthathis
father’spreparationwasevenmoredangerous.
Wearesayingthisbecauseasimilarrumorwasrifein2002thatthelateYa
Nastock-piledarmsandhispalacewasfullofwarriorsandtheytheAndani
familyhadplannedtoattacktheAbudus.OnThursday21stMarch2002we
reportedtotheSecurityandourattemptstostopthe25th to27th March
2002warwasfrustratedbytheYaNathroughthethenRegionalMinister,
PrinceImoroAndaniwhohadtocancelthenDISSEC-imposedcurfewupon
therequestoftheYaNa.Itwasthiswarthatbroughtthedeathofthelate
YaNa,Dibaandsomeotherwarriors.
LadiesandGentlemenofthepress,quiterecently,oneBasharuDaballe
issuedsimilarwarthreatstous,Dagbonandthegovernmentwithimpunity.
HeandhiscohortsattackedDAMAZinaradioprogram andtheSecurityis
yethelplesstothisday.ThislunaticBasharuDaballeandhisilkscanonly
dotheirnaggingsemanticsinTamalewhiletheRegionalMinister,Salifu
Saeed,asREGSECChairmancontinuestobeadamanttothesedistasteful
statements.WetheAbuduYouthwoulddarethewee-chargeddemented
BasharuDaballetocometoYendi,thetraditionalcapitalofDagbontotry
thatnonsense.
Ladiesandgentlemenofthepress,wetheAbuduYouthandtheAbudu
familyhavebeentoopeace-loving,too-lawabidingandtoo-cooperativebut
don’ttakeusforgranted.WetheAbuduyouthhaveparticularlyrespected
oureldersandchiefsandweareheretosayenoughisenough.From
KuffuortoAttaMills,andfrom JohnMahamatoNanaAddoDanquah
AkuffoAddo,theAndanifamilyandtheiryouthareyettocooperateon
mattersofthelaw,custom,andpeacebuildingfortheprogressofDagbon.

Theirmantraabout‘murder’ofYaNaYakubuAndaniisthemostuntenable

lieofthecentury,amysteryonlytobeunraveledbytheytheAndanifamily,
especiallytheKampakuyaNa’sfaction.
Inconclusion,ladiesandgentlemen,thegovernment,theOtumfuo-led
Committeeanddelayofthecourtprocessareseriousissuestoworry
about.Wewouldberelentlessalthoughcooperativewiththesecurityin
ensuringpeace.Anyactofviolenceshouldbeblamedontheseinstitutions
mediatingtheYendiskindebacle.Forthesakeofemphasis,ifanything
happensinDagbon,theOtumfuo-ledCommitteeshouldbeblamedfor
failing to find lasting peace for Dagbon.
