Youth chief arrested over instant justice

A 31-year-old youth Chief is in trouble with the law for allegedly presiding over the severe beating of three men suspected of cattle rustling.

The chief, Mohammed Fuseini of Kakpagyili, has been remanded into police custody by a Tamale District Court Two presided over by his Worship, Augustine Essah.

The three suspects were arrested by citizens last Friday at Kobilmahigu for allegedly stealing cattle. The suspects according to the police were taken to the youth chief’s house where they were subjected to all kinds of inhuman treatment.

 One of the suspects, Issahak Abdul Rauf, aged 25, collapsed as a result of the severe beatings and later died at theTamale Teaching Hospital. Fuseini was provisionally charged with murder of the deceased.

 Northern Regional Police Public Relations Officer said this about the incident, “even though citizens have the power of arrest, it does not give them the right to be judges in their communities.”

Two of the suspects who are Fulani by extraction had their pleas taken and were accordingly granted court enquiry bail with the sum of 30 thousand Ghana cedis and will appear in court on Sept  28.
