Pregnant woman defeats 2 men in assembly elections

A 25-years-old seven months pregnant woman, Safaru Yussif Garo has defeated two men in the Tuesday District and unit committee Level Election in Gunaayili electoral of the Karaga district.

 Madam Safaru polled 213 to beat her men counterparts Mohammed Yussif (the incumbent) who polled 151 and Patrick N. Tia with 180 votes. Madam Safura Garo was among the 77 women who contested this year’s district and unit committee elections in the northern region.

The 7-months-old pregnant women told Zaa News she was grateful to the electorates for the confidence repose in her. The incumbent assembly member for Sagnarigu electoral area, Madam Issah Zelia also defeated five men who contested her.

Madam Zelia who is using crutches as a result of a motor bike accident she suffered last year worn on the grounds of the developmental project she brought to the area.

The Sagnarigu before Madam Zelia became assembly member were challenged with basic social amenities such as toilet facilities, access road and health post among others.

Her lobbing skills and association with gender based NGOs according to some electorates in the area brought some relief to the people in the area. She was the only woman elected into the Tamale Metropolitan Assembly in 2010.  

She and some male assemblymen move to the Sagnarigu district which was curved out of the Tamale Metropolitan Assembly in 2012 when the late President J. E. A. Mills created 46 new municipal and district assemblies.
