IMG-20160120-WA0001Members of Organized Labour of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) in the Northern region today joined their colleagues across the country to demonstrate against the utility tariffs increment.

The demonstration started at about 7.49 am this morning at the Tamale jubilee park through some principal streets of Tamale.

The demonstration, according to the TUC, forms part of a series of activities lined up to put pressure on government to address the current difficulties Ghanaian workers are going through as a result of the tariffs increment.

The TUC called on the government to reduce the rate of utility tariffs and withdraw energy sector levies which have occasioned a very steep increase in petroleum prices at a time when crude oil prices are tumbling on the international market.

Speaking to the media, the agitated workers explained that, organized labour is not in denial of the need for some increases in utility tariffs.

They have warned that any delay by the government to fix their challenges will result in social instability with implications for both the economy and the policy. Ibrahim Suolo is the acting northern region TUC Secretary.

Meanwhile the Deputy Northern Regional Minister, Alhaji A.B.A Fuseini, who received the petition on behalf of government, said the government will ensure that negotiations are held to satisfy both the workers and the government.
