The University for Development Studies (UDS) will soon sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Mr. Anas Arimeyaw Anas of the Tiger Eye PI to help advance the teaching and learning of journalism studies in the Department of Journalism and Media Studies of the University at the Nyankpala campus.
In furtherance to this, the Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Seidu Alhassan will in the coming days sign on behalf of the University. Mr Anas has already signed on behalf of the Tiger Eye PI in an earlier meeting with officials of the Faculty of Communication and Media Studies. According to the MOU, the Tiger Eye PI will sponsor an award for the most promising journalism graduating student of the year for twelve years beginning this year.
The sponsorship package which is Mr. Anas’s contribution to journalism education in the north is made up of a cash prize of five thousand Ghana cedis (5,000,00) and a plague.
During a zoom meeting with leadership of the faculty of Communications and Media Studies, ahead of the signing of the MOU, Mr. Anas hoped the award scheme would encourage the students to work hard and become good journalists in future. He said the prize money could be adjusted upward depending on the value of the Ghanaian cedi.
He promised to help the department of Journalism and media studies to establish an ultra-modern studio to enable students undertake practical training. Mr. Anas also promised to deliver zoom lectures on investigative journalism periodically to help sharpen the skills of students in investigative journalism.
He also promised to involve his colleague investigative journalists working with international media like the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), Cable News Network (CNN) and Aljazeera network to share their experiences with the students to deepen their knowledge in investigative journalism.
The Dean of the Faculty of Communications and Media Studies, Professor Jesper Abembia Ayelizuno, called for more support in terms of radio and television equipment to facilitate the practical work of students.
The department of journalism which was established in 2022 has been attracting students from all over the country, including practicing journalists who are eager to obtain a degree in journalism Studies. The Journalism department is one of five departments namely performing arts, languages and information service, public relations and social change communication.
