More security support for Ghana-US Ambassador Palmer assures

The United States Ambassador to Ghana, Virginia Palmer has assured the government of Ghana of the US continuous support in the area of security, health and education.

She revealed that the US had exceeded 28 million dollars in support to the Security this year.

Ambassador Palmer said the Ghana army will witness more security support in the area of training and delivery of logistics including two ships to the Ghana Navy.

The Ambassador gave the assurance during an interview with journalists at Nyashei after handing over a 60-bed mobile hospital to the Ghana armed forces.

Ambassador Palmer reiterated the US government’s continuous support in the democratic process of Ghana to ensure free and fair elections on December 7, 2024.

She emphasized the need for citizens to be protected during elections, adding that the US embassy in Ghana has rolled out a number of programs including civic education, support for electoral commission and deployment of election monitors on election day to help the election process.

“Democracy is not just about elections but also about accountable governance and the US government is supporting the government of Ghana in accountability methods and transparency.” She said

Corruption
Responding to a question on corruption and its implications in Africa, Ambassador Palmer told journalists that corruption is not an excuse for a coup by the military, but government’s must be more accountable and transparent to the people.
Corruption, she admitted, undermines everything the government of the US and government of Ghana want to achieve for development and needs to be fought.

The US government ambassador Palmer stated that the US is also supporting institutions such as the Office of Special Prosecutor, Auditor General, EOCO, Ghana armed forces to aid in the fight against corruption.

She called on the citizens to be vigilant and demand accountability from their government.

Terror threat

Ambassador Palmer entreated Ghanaians to desist from discriminating against ethnic groups such as Fulbes. She stated that the government of Ghana acknowledged that everyone in the country must feel to live a better if they work hard.

This, she added, is the reason why the US government is supporting Ghana to improve education, health and nondiscrimination of all people.
Ghana, she stated, is resilient against terrorist activities protecting their people.

Citing Burkina Faso where Fulbes feel discriminated against and its consequences as an example, Ambassador Palmer warned Ghanaian authorities to ensure that no single group is discriminated. The more we can do to prevent discrimination and ensure that all Ghanaians are treated equally under the constitution, the better Ghana will be, Ambassador Palmer stated.
