The Northern Regional Branch of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) in a press statement, has condemned the burning of 14 tipper trucks and an excavator at Afayili, a village near Dalun in the Kumbungu district by a group of soldiers on Saturday, March 03, 2018.
On the said day, saccording to reports, some security operatives went to Afayili, a community near Dalun and set 14 tipper trucks and an excavator ablaze under the pretext that the vehicles and earth mover were being used to undertake sand winning activities on the White Volta at Nawuni in the district.
According to the union, the destruction of the equipment will result in hardships for their owners and their dependents as they have lost their livelihoods. “We are of the view that rather than burning the equipment, the security agencies could have asked the operators to vacate the yard,” the statement suggested.
The burnt equipment, the Union noted, were the only ones that served the Tamale metropolis and therefore people with building projects would not have sand to work with if the few remaining tipper truckers decide to embark on a sit-down strike.
This is the first time such an act of burning of equipment has take place in the region, and the union is calling on government to set up an independent body to investigate the circumstances surrounding the act. The statement was signed by the Northern Regional Chairman of the GPRTU, Alhaji Abubakari Alhassan and copied to Zaa News.
