The Tamale Central Constituency Secretary of the NPP and leading member of the government’s Communication Team in the Northern Region, Ahmed Faisal Yaajara, has threatened to cease communicating for the NPP and government if the trial of embattled Assin North Member of Parliament, James Gyakye Quayson is discontinued. He emphasized that such a move has the potential to affect the fair adjudication of future cases, which will be detrimental to the administration of justice in the country.

James Gyakye Quayson is facing trial for perjury at the High Court in Accra. He is facing charges of forgery and perjury in relation to certain alleged offenses in the run-up to the 2020 Assin North parliamentary election.

He has pleaded not guilty to five counts of forgery of a passport or travel certificate, knowingly making a false statutory declaration, perjury, and false declaration for office.

US-based Ghanaian lawyer and scholar, Professor Stephen Kwaku Asare (Kwaku Azar), and others such as Dormaahene Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Agyemang Badu II, and the Founder and leader of the Lord’s Parliament Chapel, Prophet Francis Amoako-Attah, have joined Ghanaians and appealed to President Akufo-Addo and the Attorney-General, Godfred Yeboah Dame, to drop the criminal charges against Mr. Gyakye Quayson. But speaking on Zaa TV’s Lahabali Churi Kahigibu Saha, a News Analysis program, Faisal Yaajara wants the trial to continue in the interest of justice.

Meanwhile a Senior Assistant Registrar at the Tamale Technical University and a Member of the NDC’s Regional Communication Team Yakubu Abdul Jaleel Bawa supports calls for the discontinuation of the trial, insisting the case is politically motivated.
