UDS Confers Honorary Doctorate on Distinguished Lawyer Ibrahim Mahama

Renowned Ghanaian statesman and lawyer, Alhaji Lawyer Ibrahim Mahama, was conferred with a prestigious Honoured Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) by the University for Development Studies (UDS) on Saturday, November 9, 2024. This esteemed recognition is a testament to his tireless efforts and dedication to the advancement of northern Ghana and the country as a whole.

Alhaji Lawyer Ibrahim Mahama’s remarkable career as a statesman and legal expert has significantly contributed to the development of Ghana’s northern region. Through his tireless advocacy, he has successfully bridged gaps in education, healthcare, and infrastructure, uplifting numerous communities and creating sustainable opportunities for future generations. His outstanding achievements have earned him recognition from the University for Development Studies (UDS), which honoured him with a prestigious PhD.

Notably, Alhaji Lawyer Ibrahim Mahama is also a renowned author, with notable works including “Justice Denied,” “Dabgani-English Dictionary,” and “English-Dagbani Dictionary.” “The Destiny of a Horse Boy” “Ya-Naa: African King of Power,” “Dagbon Royal Battles at Manhyia Palace,” “Ghana’s 2012 Presidential Election Petition,” “History and Traditions of Dagbon,” “History of Dagbon and Dagomba,” “Capital of Tamale Northern Region,” “Ghana’s Judicial Scandal Public Opinion,” “Murder of an African King: Ya-Na Yakubu,” “A Colonial History of Northern Ghana,” My Last Case in Court,” and among others. 

Born in Tibungu, a village in Northern Ghana, where he began his remarkable journey. He pursued his secondary education at Government Secondary School, Tamale, now known as Tamale Secondary School from 1956 to 1962, before proceeding to the University of Ghana, where he earned his L.L.B. degree in 1965 and was called to the Ghana Bar as an attorney in 1966.. This foundation laid the groundwork for his illustrious career as a statesman and legal luminary.

As a seasoned statesman, Alhaji Lawyer Ibrahim Mahama has held various notable positions, including Commissioner for Forestry and Information under the National Liberation Council from 1967 to 1968, Member of Parliament representing Tamale from 1969 to 1972, and Presidential Candidate for the Social Democratic Front in 1979.

As a member of the royal family of Dagbon Kingdom, he served as Solicitor and Legal Adviser to the King, Ya-Na Yakubu II, from 1974 to 2002. 

His dedication to the northern region’s growth and development has inspired many, and his legacy continues to serve as a beacon of hope for generations to come.

It’s worth noting that there are other notable two figures with similar names: Ibrahim Mahama, a Ghanaian artist and founder of the Savannah Centre for Contemporary Art (SCCA), and Ibrahim Mahama, the founder and CEO of Engineers and Planners and a brother to former President and presidential candidate for the National Democratic Congress, H.E. John Dramani Mahama. However, Alhaji Lawyer Ibrahim Mahama’s achievements and contributions are distinct and remarkable in their own right.
