At the campaign launch of Hon. Alhassan S. Suhuyini at Northern School of Business Park, former Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu called on Majority MPs contesting re-election as independent candidates to vacate their seats immediately.

According to Hon. Iddrisu, his side of the house intends to invoke Article 94(G) of the constitution to compel four Majority MPs, including Former Minister of State Cynthia Morrison and MP for Agona West, to vacate their seats after declaring their intention to seek re-election as independent candidates.

“We will invoke Article 94(G) of the constitution to ensure that our colleagues from the Majority side who have declared their intention to run as independent candidates vacate their seats,” Iddrisu stated.

Article 94(G) clearly states that a member of Parliament must give up their seat if they leave their original party to join another or run as an independent.

Hon. Iddrisu emphasized, “The constitution is clear on this matter; if you choose to leave your party to run as an independent, you cannot continue to occupy a seat you won under that party’s banner.”

He warned, “We will not allow this constitutional provision to be flouted; our democracy must be protected, and the rule of law must be upheld.”

The event drew a strong attendance of prominent MPs and parliamentary candidates, including Hon. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammad (MP for Tamale Central), Hon. Sam Dzata George (MP for Ningo-Prampram), Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa (MP for North Tongu ), Hon. A.B.A Fuseini (MP for Sagnarigu), and Hon. Issifu Seidu (MP for Nalerigu/Gambaga).

Additionally, Hon. Alhassan Umar (Parliamentary candidate for Zabzugu), Hon. Lawyer Fatawu Jofa, (Parliamentary candidate for Yendi ) Hon. Mohammed Yussif Malimali (Parliamentary candidate for Gusheigu), and Hon. Atta Issah (Parliamentary candidate for Sagnarigu) were among the notable attendees, joined by several other esteemed parliamentary candidates.

As a prominent figure in Ghanaian politics, Haruna Iddrisu has served as Minister for Employment and Labour Relations, Minister for Trade and Industry, and Minister for Communications under President John Dramani Mahama and as Minority Leader in Parliament from 2017 to 2023.
