A 20 acre land has been cleared at Diare in the Savelugu Municipality of the northern region for the construction of a 9 million Ghana cedis cassava processing factory, under the government’s one district one factory programme.
Ten acres will be used for the factory, while the remaining ten will be used for the cultivation of cassava to feed the factory.
The Savanna Agriculture Research Institute (SARI), after a technical assessment of the land, advised that the area is viable for cassava cultivation.
The factory will consist of staff accommodation, offices and processing units. Unemployed youth, both skilled and non-skilled, within the Savelugu/Nanton municipality are expected to be engaged when the factory starts operation.
The Chief Executive Officer of PT&T, the private sponsor of the factory, Prince Mohammed Tawfiq Tikuma told Zaa News at the project site that work will start in earnest after the site has been cleared.
Mr Tikuma pleaded with residents in the area to see the factory as their own by protecting and guarding everything at the site.
The Northern Regional Trade Officer, Mr Habib Issahaku, told Zaa News the trade ministry’s office in Tamale has been inundated with a lot of people on a daily basis, after the NPP announced its “one district one factory” programme, which many perceived to be the usual political promises by politicians. The setting up of the cassava factory, he said, will reduce youth migration to the south.
Hajia Ayishatu Seidu, the Savelugu Municipal Chief Executive reiterated the government’s commitment to fulfilling its campaign promise of reducing unemployment among the youth in the country.
Two additional factories, one to process sugarcane at Dipali and the other at Nabogu to process tomato are in the offing. These, Hajia Ayishatu said, will provide jobs for the teaming unemployed youth in the area.
The Regent of Diare, Abukari Abdulai said the land is still available for investors to come and invest. “I have done my best and the rest is left to the residents of Diare to better their lives. I voluntary gave out the land for the interest of development,” he said.
