Education minister expresses displeasure in N/R

The Education Minister Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh has expressed displeasure concerning the poor performance of students in the Northern Region.

According to him, northern region has produced some of the intelligent and brilliant leaders in the country yet it is considered the poorest and least privileged despite the numerous interventions from successive governments, NGOs and other organizations.

He was also not happy that the region is associated with all negative actions in the country rather than with development and education. According to him, education is the key to the development of every country and every child must be given equal rights to education hence the implementation of the Free Senior High School as well as the double track system.

Continuing, he said the free senior High School policy has come as a relief to parents and guardians and has also created opportunities for the enrollment of more children in school. He said government is going to enact a legislation to make access to SHS compulsory for every school going child.

The Manhyia South Constituency legislator said government is ensuring that every child has access to quality and equal education. He said for that goal to be achieved, district directors of education, Circuit supervisors and teachers must take responsibility of training and bringing the best out in the students. No child should be denied of education he noted.

The minister was speaking to journalists at the weekend during his visit to the northern region to assess the progress of the double track system since the first batch(green) had vacated to pave way for the second batch (Gold).

He visited four senior high schools namely; Tamale Senior High School(TAMASCO), Northern School of Business, (NOBISCO), Vitting Senior high school and Dabokpa Technical Institute.

At Dabokpa, the headmistress appealed to the minister to assist the school with more infrastructure, and other logistics to enable students learn effectively.
