Meat consumers in the Tamale metropolis have raised serious health concerns about the manner in which meat is being handled and displayed along some major streets and some butcher houses.
The consumers are worried that the meat is being left at the mercy of the weather and all manners of airborne diseases. Checks by Zaa News at the Central market and other parts of the municipality indicate that meats is left uncovered in the open exposing it to dust, germs and flies before being sold to customers.
The practice consumers say constitutes a public nuisance and needs the intervention of the public health directorate of Ghana Health Service. The consumers blame the situation on environmental health inspectors and other health institutions for doing little to quell the situation.
But the chairman of the Northern Regional Butchers Association, Alhaji Hudu Sayibu in an interview with Zaa News said some members of the association have been going around occasionally to individual butchers to conduct checks and provide education on the need to cover their meat.
Alhaji Sayibu said butchers are aware of the need to sell their meats in hygienic surroundings either in the market or by the road side.
