A psychiatric nurse at the Tamale Central hospital (TCH), Mr. Isaac Borlu has called on government to pay attention to mental health issues in the country, just as it does to other medical conditions.
According to him, mental illness is like any other medical condition and needs necessary attention. The disorder, he says, should not be neglected since no man is completely mentally stable. Mr. Borlu said government should work at supplying anti-psychotics to the mental health authorities to enable them to work efficiently.
Mr. Borlu mentioned the inadequacy of transport and financial constraints as some of the challenges they are facing. Government, he admitted, is doing its best but added that it is woefully inadequate.
Mr Borlu, who was speaking exclusively to Zaa News, revealed that since 2011, the TCH has not received supplies of psychotropic medication from government except for those donated by Basic Needs and other donor agencies. The support for the unit, he noted, is very low, hence the need for government to come to their aid.
