The Karaga District Assembly in collaboration with chiefs in the area has put together a sanitation by-law to govern sanitation practice in the District. The by-law which is currently at the Regional Coordinating Council for gazette will prescribe punitive sanctions for landlords who fail to construct toilets in their homes.

The District Chief Executive Officer of Karaga, Mr. Alhassan Yabdow who was speaking at the Sanitation Business Expo indicated that the Karaga District regards sanitation as a key priority intervention which needs broader collaborations from partners to achieve district wide Open Defecation Free (ODF) by December this year.

He said over 133 communities have already attained ODF and 20 communities have been presented for verification and subsequent declaration of ODF.

The Sanitation Marketing Expo was under the auspices of UNICEF, the National Board for Small Scale Industries and the Karaga District Assembly 30 latrine artisans have been trained to enhance their skills and capabilities to deliver efficiently on mass construction of innovative and affordable household latrines that are easy and comfortable to use.

The Head of Business Advisory Centre in Karaga, Mr. Osman Adam Issah emphasized the need to approach sanitation work as a business to sustain efforts in the fight against the insanitary conditions.

This, he said, is the only way to ensure the sustainability of sanitation interventions after the exit of donor agencies.
