The Tamale Metropolitan Assembly (TaMA) as at Wednesday afternoon has received a total of one hundred and seventy-four thousand one hundred and fifty Ghana cedis (GHC 174, 150) from companies, individuals and enterprises towards the June 30th maiden Mayor’s Excellence Awards.
The donations which came in cash and cheques according to TaMA are paid into the assembly’s Ghana commercial bank accounts for the purposes of accountability. The main sponsor of the awards, Stanbic Bank pledged 50,000 Ghana cedis and has honored 30, 000 so far.
A number of banks and financial institutions have made money donations and some are still on their way to honor their pledges after the assembly extended invitations seeking financial support.
The awards initiated by the Metropolitan Chief Executive, Mr. Iddrisu Musah Superior and endorsed by the assembly are expected to honor deserving personalities for the various roles they play in developing the city.
Justifying the initiative, the mayor said for the past 26 years of democratic dispensations, no local authority in Ghana has ever instituted a formal award for its citizens. This prompted him to consult about eleven mayors before him on his proposal which has received positive responses and raised some concerns at the same.
The committee tasked by TaMA received 400 nominations from individuals who picked the forms to nominate people they think have contributed and deserve to be awarded. Briefing the media ahead of Saturday’s ceremony, the mayor said the 58 assembly members who constitute the TaMA will receive certificates of recognition.
Ten people will also be awarded in a category the committee and the assembly described as ‘Special Awards’ for people with different expertise in various sectors. Responding to questions on why the assembly is awarding some deserving citizens, the mayor said the potential awardees never thought of receiving awards for the work they have been doing over the years.
Children on streets of Tamale
Responding to questions from hour on the aftermaths of his recent rescued of some 22 children last month, the mayor maintained that his action has not failed and promised that the Taskforce will soon hit the street again.
Days after the exercise, the number of children in the street seems to have increased raised questions about the impact of the much touted exercise which attracted huge public attention.
The mayor’s raid on the forest to get rid of wee smokers was also questioned. Since the exercise the assembly has not be able to mention the amount it spent.
Sanitation in the metropolis
Some parts of the metropolis are engulfed with refuse and chocked gutters leaving many residents pondering if awarding some citizens was the priority of citizens authorities.
Many residents have also raised several concerns about pot holes on most of both feeder and the major roads. But the mayor said the assembly is on course and will address the citizens concerns.
