A torrential rainfall in Tamale on Tuesday evening caused extensive damage to several houses and stalls along some streets in the metropolis and in the Sagnarigu district in the northern Region
The worst affected areas include Taha community, Nanton Kpawumo, Nyohini, and the Dabokpaa-Vittin area. Others include Dimale, Dugushegu, Kpalsi, Gurugu, Katariga and Sognaayili.
At Taha, nine houses were affected, with three of their roofs completely removed, while seven houses including a private children’s home and its auxiliary school were also destroyed by the storm.
The children’s home school, built by a philanthropist and the only school serving orphans and children from the Kpawumo community, had its roofs completely removed. NADMO officials in the Sagnarigu district have put the total number of people affected as 16.
Mr. Abdul Karim Yabdoo, the assemblyman for the Taha-Nanton Kpamo electoral area told Zaa News that residents were shocked by the sheer destruction. The affected residents, he said are currently residing with friends and relatives, while waiting for help from the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO).The assemblyman said he is at a loss as to what will be done when school reopens because of the extent of the destruction.
The zonal coordinator of the National Disaster Management Organization in the Sagnarigu district, Luqman Salifu Kojo told Zaa News that NADMO is currently collecting data from the affected residents before a decision will be taken to help the victims.
Sagnarigu district chief executive Alhassan Mohammed Sorigudoo and the deputy northern regional minister and member of parliament for the area, Alhaji A.B.A Fuseini have toured the affected communities to assess the extent of the damage.
The district NADMO officers who collected data on the affected persons appealed to the regional NADMO officers to come to their aid. Speaking to the media, the deputy northern regional minister assured the victims not to panic as NADMO is working with the assembly to get them help.
