The Dagbon Students Association (DASA) of the University of Education Winneba (UEW) has issued a stern warning against what they call the anti-northern propaganda in the national media by those bent on destroying the north.
The association maintained that the continue twisting and misrepresentation of issues in the north were deliberate attempts by some people with a hidden agenda to marginalize the north and Dagbon as a whole.
The students condemned some sections of the Ghanaian media who they observed have made it their agenda to always portray the north and Dagbon as a volatile area in the country.
Such media houses, the DASA observed, have in one way or other, succeeded in keeping out investors interested in investing in the north and the Dagbon which has worsened under-development and the unemployment situation.
At the maiden DASA forum and Damba festival held at the university’s South assembly hall, it’s President, Mr. Swaidu Issahaku called for an end to such negative reporting. “It does not auger well for national cohesion,” Mr. Issahaku noted.
The forum was on the theme; Developing Dagbon State Through Quality Education, the role of Dagbon youth.
He called on the people, especially the youth to resort to dialogue in resolving any impasse rather than resorting to violent means.
The DASA President appealed to the authorities of UEW to establish a satellite campus in the Dagbon traditional area.
He believed establishing the campus in the north will enable hundreds of students with interest in pursuing various programs being run by the University of Education Winneba to get the much needed education they need.
According to DASA, the number of students from the north has increased and establishing satellite campus will add to the number of UEW northern students. In appealing for a satellite campus, the association pledged to lobby local chiefs for land to the build the campus.
The association pointed out that some students from the north pursuing either education or linguistics have to go UEW satellite campus in Ashanti Mampong and Ajumaku. This, DASA believes could have been avoided if there is satellite campus in the north.
A patron of UEW DASA, Mr Issahaku Alhassan encouraged students from the north to take advantage of tertiary education opportunities at Winneba. He advised all northern students in the various tertiary institutions to be disciplined and embrace hardwork to erase the negative perception about northerners.
The celebration was on the theme: Developing Dagbon State through Quality Education, the role of Dagbon Youth, was graced by the Dagomba Chief of Winneba .
