The President, John Dramani Mahama has officially broken ground for the reconstruction work to start on what he described as one of the most important road project ever undertaken in the history of Ghana.
The two hundred and nine kilometer (209km) Oti-Damako road- Nakpanduri section of the eastern corridor road in the northern region when completed will improved economic activities as well as eased transportation problems of the people in the northern Ghana.
The president also mentioned the Wa-Tumu Bolga, Tamale-Makango, Yendi-Chereponi, Yendi-Zabzugu and Tamale-Karaga-Gusheigu roads among others government will be addressing soon.
The eastern corridor road project which is a joint venture is being funded through corporation between the Ghana of government and the government of Brazil.
Addressing a durbar of chiefs and people in Yendi, president Mahama said Ghana is making slow but progress.
The project president said marks a milestone not only for the people in northern region but the all people residing in the eastern corridor of Ghana.
The road president Mahama said the road serve another example that Ghana is moving forward and not backward because the road existed since pre-colonial times was an old trade road on which traders from the Northern Sahelean part used to bring goods across the Middle East through Salaga, Bimbilla and Volta parts of Ghana.
The economic activities that takes place in the eastern corridor the president observed is very important especially, with regard to agriculture production in Ghana.
The eastern corridor road stretches from the Tema Motorway round about in Accra to Kulungugu near Bawku in the Upper East Region.
TheThe road passes through five regions with 24 metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies benefiting from the road. Eastern corridor President added will give meaning to the expansion that government is conducting in the Tema port.
