Shop owners at the Tamale Central Market have removed their goods and other valuable properties from stalls to pave way for the construction of a new complex by the Tamale Metropolitan Assembly (TMA).
The self-demolishing exercise started after the assembly concluded discussions on how to put the market into better and safer shape for traders. The new complex will start from Zenith bank end to the total filling stations area popularly called beggars lane and later the whole enclave of the market.
The three-story building, according to the assembly, will commence with phase one for the time being. This follows several meetings between the assembly and the traders to get decent and well-planned market for the people of the Northern Region.
The design of the market has been in the assembly’s medium term development plan for several years now in spite of appeals by the residents to give the market facelift to befit the metropolis status.
Residents who spoke to Zaa News expressed the hope that more stalls will be added to the existing ones. They are also grateful to TMA for taking a bold step to start the project.
The Chairman of Progressive Traders Association (PTA) Thomas Adjei told Zaa News that the move by the assembly was a good initiative and hoped that the contractor will finish the work on schedule for normal business activities in the market to continue.
