Consumgariers of gari in the northern region are dealing with the shock of new prices. The price of gari has shot up by more than 100% in the Tamale Central and Aboabo markets within the period of March to May. A bag of gari in March was sold at GH¢130.00, GH¢200.00 in April and GH¢300.00 in May.

Similarly, a bowl of gari has risen from GH¢4.50 in March to GH¢7.00 in May, 2016. Yam and cassava are very scarce in the market and the little supplies that were available were very costly. A tuber of yam ranged from four cedis to five cedis, depending on type and the size.

Consumers, who spoke to Zaa Business News, attributed the high prices to the scarcity of these commodities. The prices of other foodstuffs like maize, beans, foreign rice, groundnut, soya beans, cabbage, tomatoes, onions, pepper, eggs and local rice were not stable as they varied.

Traders told Zaa News that prices are likely to experience marginal reduction in the coming days. This is due to the introduction of new products in the market as farmers enter the farming season.
