Members of the Ghana Blind Union have urged the people in the northern region to guard jealously against their eyes to avoid blindness. According to the northern region chapter of the union, those riding motor bikes without crash helmets and sunglasses risk losing their eye sight.

Several insects and particles from the road get into your eyes and removing them affects the eye balls, the union observed.

The Blind Union, as part of their week-long celebration, is also urging parents and basic school managers in the region not to allow their children to play with stones, sticks and wicked football play in school parks targeted at the eyes.

These, they noted, are contributory factors in most eye problems. Three members of the Union who came to the studios of Zaa on Friday, told host of Behigu Maligu Saha, Ms Memunatu Abubakri that they would visit schools to educate school children on the dangers involved in whatever they are engaged in.

The move forms part of their week-long celebration. They have also appealed to people to voluntarily go for eye screening. “From our experience, some of us before becoming totally blind were seeing rainbow signs almost every time and we were told it was a sign of Trachoma but we did not take it seriously,” they disclosed.

They further urged parents, particularly the elderly not to resort to traditional treatment of their eyes because traditional treatment sometimes worsens eye problems, adding that they are not against traditional treatment but the way and manner it is done is worrying, the Union observed.

The blind Union also sounded a caution to old ladies weaving cotton to be extra careful because pieces of it are dangerous to their eyes.
