Renewed communal violence between Gonjas and Tampulmas in two communities in the North Gonja District on Saturday has resulted in the deaths of two people and the torching of  35 houses, police said.

Authorities identified the dead as John Bikari, 45, who was found with gunshot wounds, and Dima Kara, 90, whose body was burnt.

Confirming the incident to the media, ASP Mohammed Yussif Tanko said police from Daboya and Damongo have been dispatched to the area to forestall further escalation of violence while adding that two communities, Saligu and Dissah, are reeling from the violence.

The violence began when the Daboya Wura sent some men to the area and they were allegedly attacked by the Tampulisi, ASP Tanko said. The Gonjas, he continued, subsequently mobilized and went on a retaliation mission. But the Tampulimas got wind of the impending attack and fled their communities leaving behind the two corpses.

The refusal of the Waspiwura Mimuni Kabasagya II and the Yagbonwura to create a paramountcy for the Tampulma ethnic tribe has been a bone of contention for the area.Tension is said to mounting in towns and communities in the area amid heavy security.
