25-year-old Alhassan Abdul Rahman, who was sentenced on his own plea, has already started serving his jail term at the Tamale central prisons. He was arraigned before the circuit court last week for stealing.

Rahman was convicted for stealing a ballot box in the Nantong constituency during the NDC primaries but was arrested at a polling station in the constituency by a joint arm military/ police team detailed to prevent any violent incidents in the area.

Speaking to Zaa News after the ruling, the Northern Regional Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Ebenezer Tetteh described the sentencing as a signal to people nurturing ambitions to foment trouble in the 2016 general elections to “revise their notes” or prepare to face the consequences.
