The Northern Regional Chairman of the Opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has asked all regional, constituency executives in the region to stay away from the 62nd national independence celebration in Tamale in solidarity with his national chairman, Mr Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo.
Chief Alhaji Ibrahim Mobila Abdulai said even though he had his invitation already to participate, he will not attend the celebrations and urged NDC members not to step foot at the Alhaji Aliu Mahama sports stadium.
The visibly angry NDC chairman told the media in his office Monday evening that, the invitation of national chairman, Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo by the police CID was politically motivated.
Chief Mobila said the unnecessary detention of the NDC national chairman and the long hours that supporters and some bigwigs waited at the CID headquarter was a clear indication that the police was being manipulated by the NPP government.
He added that the party was ready to take part in the national event but the posturing of the police indicates that they are up to something rather than getting to the bottom of an alleged security threat tape.
Chief Mobila argued that people within the NPP have said things that posed more security threats than the one they are alleging NDC national chairman posed and that is just the matter of time because the NPP will be not be in power forever.
The opposition chairman promised two days of non-stop demonstration across the region if the police continue their boorish behavior.
He is also asking the former president, John Dramani Mahama who is expected in Tamale today not to attend the event if the Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo is not released.
NDC members, Chief Mobila stressed, will attend the event on condition that the national chairman is released. He showed the media a letter of notification of the NDC’s intended demonstration to the police and invitations cards he personally sent to the regional coordinating council.
The letter indicated that the demonstration will commence on 5th March and continue on Wednesday 6th March, 2019.
Meanwhile Mr Ofosu-Ampofo has been officially charged by the police and granted GH 400,000 bail. He is expected to report back to the police CID headquarters on Thursday.
