Government has presented 1108 brand new motor bikes worth 4,986. 000 Ghana cedis to the 28 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies for the distribution to assembly members.
The presentation of the bikes was in response to a request from assembly members in 2014 to facilitate their movement in their electoral areas. The bikes are expected to enhance the work of the assembly members.
Presenting the bikes to the Tamale metro and Sagnarigu municipality on Sunday, the Northern Regional Minister, Mr. Salifu Saeed pleaded with the beneficiary assembly members to take good care of the bikes.
Mr Saeed warned the assembly members not to make any attempt to sell the bikes. The presiding members of the various MMDAs the minister explained, have been tasked to ensure that assembly members use the bikes for its intended purpose.
The PMs the minister said will keep record of the bikes and also track their usage because the excuses of the assembly members in the past was that they do not have means of transport. Proper use of the bikes Mr Saeed said will encourage the government and the metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies (MMDAs) to assist them apply part of the Internal Generated Funds to acquire the necessary logistics for their work.
Northern region according to the Minister is the first to start the distribution. Presiding member for Sagnarigu Municipal Assembly Mr Mohammed Awal thanked the government for finally listening to their concerns.
He assured the government and the National Association of Local Authorities Ghana that the bikes will be used for their intended purposes.
