Fire gutted a laboratory store containing some medical equipment, chemical readers, laboratory kits and some malaria drugs at the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH) Wednesday morning.
The fire according some workers in the hospital started at about 7a.m. and lasted less than 30 minutes. Workers at the store were however able to use fire extinguishers to control the fire before personnel of the Ghana National fire service arrived to augment their effort.
Officials of the hospital said, the burnt equipment is of low value and that the expensive equipment are safe. The affected equipment burnt included; diagnostic tubes, EDTA’s, EDTA’s tubes and few malaria test kits and lancets.
But for the timely intervention of workers at the store and personnel of the Ghana National fire service, the fire could have escalated to the adjoining stores.
Some workers at the store suspected that the fire might have been caused by an electrical fault. However, head of the Northern Regional National Fire Service, Douglass Quanoo said investigation has begun in earnest to ascertain the cause of the fire.
He told the media that, the store contains chemicals with little ventilation but unable to tell what was the cause of the fire.
The Chief Executive Officer of the Tamale Teaching Hospital, Dr Prosper Akanbong assured the public that, healthcare delivery of the hospital will not be affected. Deputy Director of Supply Chain at the TTH, Paul Senyo told Zaa News that, God saved the hospital because all the expensive pieces of equipment are safe.
