Over 1 billion cedis spare parts stall razed down by fire in industrial area

A raging fire on Sunday swept through a spare parts stall at the Tamale industrial zone destroying an estimated 1 billion Ghana cedis in goods and reducing the property to ashes, authorities said. No one was killed or injured in the blaze.

The fire which started at about 3 p.m. destroyed  farm tractors, lorry tires, car batteries and over 50 drums of oil. Three fire squadrons rushed to the scene and battled the inferno for almost two hours before bringing it under control, authorities said. The cause of the fire is yet to be determined, officials added. However, sources at the magazine said they suspect the fire might have been caused by a spark from a welder working in the yard.

The owner of the shop, Mr Mark Akuliga, according to an eye witness was at the shop at the time of the fire and looked helpless on as the fire consumed his property. He was reportedly taken away from the scene by one Alhaji Magazine who was afraid that Mr.Akuliga will harm himself.

The shop is one of the largest spare parts shops in the northern region and is noted for its low prices. Mechanics who purchase spare parts from the shop told Zaa News the owner has lost a big time investment. As at the time of going to the press,  armed police and military personnel have sealed off the area.
