Five people were killed after a truck with registration number 5742-C loaded with goods and passengers mostly traders, traveling from Yendi to Tamale veered off the road and landed on its side, police said.
Officials said the accident occurred on Wednesday at about 8:40 pm in Wamale in the Tamale metropolis.
The traders were returning from Sang Market in the Mion district of the northern region.
According to authorities, the driver of the truck, 41-year-old, Mohammed Baako tried to avoid a cyclist who had cut him off, but ended up hitting and killing him instantly.
Some 40 passengers on board the truck sustained various degrees of injuries and were rushed to Tamale teaching hospital for treatment.
Ten of the injured are still on admission and responding to treatment, while those with minor injuries were treated and released, hospital officials added.
The Motor Traffic and Transport Department in the northern region quoted
Dr. Mohammed Ibrahim the pathologist at the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH) as confirming that the deceased included the driver.
The dead have since been released to relatives after postmortem.
