Residents of Busunu in the West Gonja Municipality of the Savannah region have embarked on a clean-up exercise to commemorate this year’s Independence Day celebrations. The exercise which was in collaboration with the Church of Pentecost and led by the assembly member for the area, Dari Thomas was convened by the paramount chief of the area, Busunuwura Monasa Jonokpowu II.
Students from the two major schools in the community (D/A and St Peter’s), supervised by their teachers were the major participants with support from residents.
Addressing the participants after the exercise, the paramount chief pledged his commitment to making Busunu the cleanest in Savana region. He said there was the need to at all times clean the environment to ensure that people live healthy lives, adding that cleaning the environment and indiscriminate waste disposal should be a concern to every resident.
He indicated that, the exercise would be a regular affair and not only on occasional days. The exercise kicked started at the offices of Busunu Area Council through to the business street junction and ended at the new market at the outskirt.
Participants desilted major gutters and storm drains within the community as well as cleaning, clearing, gathering and burning of refuse at some principal landfill sites.
Assembly member for the area, Dari Osman Thomas expressed his satisfaction at how clean the village looked after the exercise and appealed to individuals, benevolent organizations and the government to provide the community with waste bins. He called on investors to come and invest in the area as it’s a business thriving area.
