Four dead in Walewale after canoe capsized in the White Volta

Four farmers from Wungu, a farming community in the West Mamprusi district of the northern region have been confirmed dead by the police after their canoe capsized in the White Volta.

The four, the police said, were returning from their farms on Saturday, September 16/9/17 at about 10:30 a,m.

The chief of Wungu reported the incident to the police after he received distressed calls that Mr Issahaku Musah, a native of Wungu and a resident of Binbini village reportedly hired some people to work on his farm on the other side of the White Volta.

According to sources, on their way back home, the boat they were riding in capsized and four of the five people on board drowned,

The deceased are Mr Abdul Samed Abdulai, 28, Mr Yidana Tahiru, 37, Mr Abudu Haruna, 24, and Mr Rauf Tanko, 25. However, Mr Abuba Abdulai, 27, who was the fifth person survived the drowning.

Northern Regional Police public relations officer, ASP Yussif Tanko who confirmed the incident to Zaa news, said the police immediately proceeded to the scene upon receipt of the information together with officials of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) operation Thunder boat team based in Walewale.

With the assistance of the community, ASP Tanko said all the bodies were recovered from the river. The medical doctor from Walewale government hospital who accompanied police to the scene examined the bodies before releasing them to respective family members for burial.
