Health alert; months heap of refuse engulfed Tamale metro&Sagnarigu Municipal

Residents of Lamashegu North electoral area in the Tamale Metropolis have been relief of any possible outbreak of cholera in the area at least for now.

It follows intervention by the Zoomlion Ghana and Sanitation ministry clearing several months heap of refuse in the public toilet.

The refuse the residents said was threatening their life’s, especially during this raining season. 

The refuse split onto the road sparking anger among residents over the Tamale metropolitan Assembly inability to collect the waste.

A staunch member of the governing New Patriotic Party who was upset about the nasty situation Hajia Maria Abukari expressed her disappointment and called on the president and the sanitation minister to intervene before cholera hit the area.

Her viral video in less than 74hrs attracted the powers that be attention leading to the directive by the sanitation minister to Zoomlion to immediately evacuate the waste.  

Speaking to Zaa News, the excited Hajia Maria thanked the president, Zoomlion, and Sanitation minister for prompt response and appealed for two big refuse containers to prevent the nasty situation resurface again.

Northern Regional Manager of Zoomlion, Mr Dawuni Peter told Zaa News his outfit evacuated the heaps of refuse at the instance of the sanitation minister.

He explained that the even though the area doesn’t fall within their remit, it was an emergency health issue.  Mr Peter calls for proper disposal of waste by the residents and also appealed to them to adopt household waste bins assuring that Zoomlion has the capacity to supply every household.

Assembly member for Lamashegu North, Mr Sulemana Alhassan Major has join calls by resident for waste containers to prevent indiscriminate disposal of waste at the public toilet there.

 The assemblyman attributed the nasty situation at the toilet that has generated discussions on the increasing insanitary situation within the Tamale metropolis.

The assemblyman disclosed that a stringent measures will take ensure to ensure proper disposal of waste once the area got containers.

According to the assemblyman, community members have been educated on proper disposal of refuse and warned that punitive actions will be taken against residents who refused to adhere to the assembly sanitation bylaws.

He explained that it is not easy for the assembly to generate enough revenue for developmental projects including evacuation of rubbish.

On the Pays As you Dump new ways of managing waste, Mr  Alhassan Major indicated that the assembly was considering it in almost all the electoral areas because of the positive outcome from the few electoral areas the assembly has piloted.
