A Head of Programs, Policy and Campaigns at Norsaac, Hafsatu Sey Sumani has stated the need for young people especially girls to know about their reproductive health rights. She said having knowledge about their sexual rights will go a long way to prevent teenage pregnancy and early marriages.
Madam Hafsatu who was speaking to Zaa News insisted children should be given the right information about their reproductive life. She disagrees that young people’s awareness on their sexuality rights will lead them to fornication or other social vices.
She said family planning which is a way of preventing teenage pregnancy is a delicate issue to discuss especially in rural areas, calling on parents to discuss reproductive issues with their children to protect them from exploring negatively.
’’I will want to plead with parents to discuss this issue with their children especially the female ones, and stop pretending that if they know it they will practice it outside’’. She said though the northern region has made some progress in tackling teenage pregnancy, more needs to be done to end the menace completely.
According to her, the inability of government and GES to implement Comprehensive Sexuality Education at the basic school level and the silence about reproductive education from society are challenges facing the fight against teenage pregnancy in the region.
