We concentrated so much in taxing the market women, our attention needs to be shifted to property rate, Tamale Metropolitan Coordinating Director (TaMA) Coordinating Director Mr Gilbert Nuuri-Teg has said whereas much of the revenue of the assembly is supposed to be property rate.

The over reliance on market women he observed was affecting the revenue generation drive and needed to be reconsidered to improve Internal Generated Funds (IGF). The assembly, Mr Nuuri-Teg revealed, may not be able to meet its IGF of over 2million cedis target for 2021.

He was not sure if the assembly will be able to meet the target in just two months to the end of the year, it has realized a little over 40% of its target.

He explained that people put up big houses and mansions outskirts of the metropolis but don’t pay rate, stressing that the only way citizens can demand accountability is when they pay their property rate and if they don’t, it will be very difficult for the assembly to embark on such projects such as roads because they are very expensive, Mr Nuuri-Teg stated.

On measures to prevent revenue leakages which have been a bane for most assemblies in the country, the coordinating director expressed doubts if revenue leakages can be curbed in any assembly. According to him, once human beings are involved, there will always be leakages.

He explained that some of the leakages are done in connivance with the citizens, adding offenders of the law prefer paying fines without demanding official receipts to paying to the assembly coffers.

Mr Gilbert NUURI-Teg in an interview with Zaa News said even though citizens are right in asking what city authorities are using the tax they collect for, they should not lose sight of the fact that, assembly builds schools, CHIPs compounds, maintenance of security anytime there is disturbances in a community and other services it provides. Property owners, he said, have put up big mansions but are not paying property rates to enable assembly to provide basic social amenities such as access roads and water.

The assembly he added is also challenged with a valuation list to enable them to do proper assessment of those houses. He also cautioned property owners not to undervalue their properties as it will affect them in feature.

‘People forget their children go to school and attend clinics as well as curt heaps of waste doted within the metropolis’, Mr Nuuri-Teg stated. The assembly he added is doing a lot, some which are not tangible for the people to see.
