Tension mounts in Chereponi over nomination of former NDC DCE daughter

 The nomination of the late former District Chief Executive under former president John Dramani Mahama administration Hajia Mery Nakobu daughter for Chereponi district in the North East Region has sparked chaos in the area.

The local government and rural development Minister, Mr Dan Bowte on Sunday, September 19, 2021 released names of Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDECs) after almost 9-months of the government’s second term.

Shortly after the announcement by Mr Dan Bowte at the information ministry coordinated press conference with Zuweratu Mada Nashiru name as second among the 6 MDCEs in the North East, some irritate youth of the governing New Patriotic Party went on rampage vandalizing party pavilions.

 The angry youth set some properties ablaze amidst insults and curses on party leadership for the choice in the district.  The nominee according to the aggrieved party supporters defected to NPP after 20116 general elections and therefore can’t be the most qualify person in the area.  

The vetting committee they claimed, recommended Mr Kofi Salfiu Orlando for the position but his application was not considered by the appointing authority.

 Ahead of Sunday announcement, National Security Ministry issued alert to all Metropolitan, Municipal and District security committees and the regional security councils to be on high alert to forestall violence in their respective areas. 

The North East Regional Security council has since beef up in the district to prevent further distraction of party properties and possible spark of violence in the fragile area.

Multiple videos from the district capital saw some young people burning and engaging in what appeared to be fisticuffs.
