The New Patriotic Party (NPP) elected parliamentary candidate for Karaga constituency, Mr Basha Sharawi Yilfa has resigned on health grounds, the party’s regional secretary Mr Abdul Salifu has said.
Mr Yilfa’s official resignation paves the way for the party to open new nominations and organize fresh parliamentary primary to elect a candidate for the 2016 elections.
The candidate who has been battling injuries he sustained in a vehicle accident four months ago was finally advised by medical doctors to get a thorough medical examinatio.
Mr Yilfa was vetted on Skype in the United States of America where he works and sworn in as a candidate in absentia. After wining the primary, he returned to Ghana and on his way to Tamale, his vehicle was involved in a fatal accident at Kintampo in the Brong Ahafo region which claimed one live.
Ironically, Mr Yilfa was also pronounced dead together with two others on board the Toyota Land-cruiser. The three occupants of the vehicle were brought to the Tamale Teaching Hospital.
Reports said when Mr Yilfa’s dead body began moving, mortuary attendants suspected that, he was still alive, and quickly rushed him to the emergency ward where he received treatment and was discharged.
But that was not the end of his ordeal. He went into a coma for two weeks at the hospital where he was revived. A medical report attached to the resignation letter indicated that he was unfit for the campaign and has to be on a hospital bed to rest for three good months, Mr Sule said.
His employees, according to Mr Sule, asked him to return to US for further treatment which he adhered to.
Confirming the resignation to Zaa News, Mr Sule explained that, Mr Yilfa knew about his conditions and as a loyal member of the party thought it wise to tender in his resignation to enable the party elect a new candidate before the electoral commission request for the list of parliamentary candidates from all the political parties.
Meanwhile, three persons vying to replace Mr Yilfa have filed their nominations as at the close of work on Tuesday, Mr Sule said. Fresh primaries is expected to take place on Saturday at Karaga.
“Our candidate loves the party, our candidate knows that the NPP will win the Karaga seat, that why he resigned,” Mr Sule stated
