Defence ministry opens French learning center at 6 Garrison in Tamale

As part effort of promoting French speaking in Ghana, the ministry of defence with support from the France embassy has established French learning center at 6Garrison of the Ghana Arm Forces (GAF) in Tamale.  

The ministry says the promotion was in support of their vision to build a professional Arm Forces with adequate capacity to perform effectively both at home and abroad.

Ghana according to the defence ministry is surrounded by French speaking countries and to enhance regional cohesion, language barriers must be broken to enable Ghana’s troops to operate with their counterparts in the French speaking countries. The France Ambassador to Ghana, Frédéric Clavier and some traditional rulers opened French learning center in Tamale.

Speaking at the inauguration of the center in Tamale, a deputy defence minister Ebenezer Okletey Terlarbi on behalf of the sector minister Mark Wayongo said, the center would also save as tool in aid of conflict resolution within the sub-region and the African continent.

He said government has initiated series of interventions to develop working knowledge in the French language among the personnel of Ghana arm forces.

He mentioned institution of ’’French Day ’’ as one of the interventions to ensure a fair level of proficiency in the GAF. The 6 Garrison French center in Tamale was the seventh in Ghana Arm Forces in the country.

Over 500 all ranks and civilians employees of GAF have been trained in basic, intermediate and advanced French courses using facility since the inception of the program.
