Four dead in Bimbilla: several houses torched

 Four persons has been confirmed dead by the Northern Regional Police command  through gun shots following a renewed chieftaincy dispute in the Bimbilla of the northern region. Several houses  have also been torched . Nine people are reported to have sustained gunshot wounds in the disturbances characterized by a sporadic shooting which started at about 11 am local time today.

Public Relations Officer of police ASP Ebenezer Tetteh who confirm this said personnel of the Ghana police service has been dispatched to beef-up security in Bimbilla.

The incident happened when disagreement ensued between butchers in the Bimbilla Abattoir over whether they should, as custom and tradition demand, continue sending meat to the regent of Bimbilla Yakubu Dasana Andani.

 On the contrary, some butchers maintained the tradition should not continue sending the meat to the palace any longer.

A resident told Zaa News that after a heated argument at the Bimbilla abattoir, some butchers decided to send the meat to the palace which incurred the wrath of the others. ’’We were asked by the security at about 12 noon to go home and those at home ordered to remain as such’’ he adds.

 Zaa News sources in Bimbilla say for almost a week now rumors were in town about a possible clash with District Security Committee making efforts to nip it in the bud.

Bimbilla is one of the towns in the northern region government has imposed curfew on and has been renewing it. The people of Bimbilla are forced go to bed from 9pm till 5am.

This morning’s disturbances led to the security making residents stay indoors. The curfew in Bimbilla was first imposed in the last quarter of 2014 after clashes in the town following a chieftaincy dispute resulting in the death of the late Bimbilla Overlord, Andani Dasana

So far no arrest has been made.
