NCA licenses 247 radio stations, 28 TV stations

The National Communications Authority (NCA), as at the last quarter of 2011, has authorised 247 FM radio stations and 28 TV stations to operate in Ghana. A report on the website of the NCA said out of the 247 authorised radio stations, 34 are Public radio stations, 37 are Community radio stations, 11 are Campus radio stations and 166 are Commercial radio stations, adding that 217 are operational and the remaining 30 have not yet started operations.
A list of the radio stations posted on NCA website indicates Greater Accra topped with 41 stations, followed by Ashanti and Western Regions with 34 each, Brong-Ahafo, 33; Eastern Region, 25; Northern Region, 23; Central Region, 22; Volta Region, 18, Upper East, nine (9), and Upper West, eight (8).
The list also gave a breakdown of how many commercial, community, public and campus radio stations are in each region, and how many stations are not yet operational.
The NCA’s report also noted out of the total of 28 TV stations authorised, 20 are Free-on-air, seven (7) are Pay-Per-View and one, owned by Great KOSA Company Limited, is for research purposes.
The list did not indicate regional distribution, and did not also say whether some were not yet operational.
