Quality education is a right, let’s protect it-Professor Seidu advises

The Director Institution of Continuing Education and Interdisciplinary Research (ICEIR) of the University for Development Studies, Professor Seidu Alhassan has urged the heads of Senior High Schools in the northern region to stop admitting what he termed ‘High aggregate qualified students’.

Professor Seidu described such admission system in the northern region as crazy and urged head masters to have a second look at it.

Admission of those students according to professor Seidu contributes to the problems confronting quality education in Ghana.

Touching on the examination malpractices, professor Seidu expressed shock at the involvement of people who are supposed to prevent such practices. ’’Quality education is a right and we need to protect it’’ he appealed.

Professor, Seidu Alhassan, has therefore identified three key areas that can guarantee quality education in Ghana.

The areas include how students adapt to trends in education, students learning environment and   the ability of the learners to apply knowledge gained to the benefits of the society.

Professor Seidu Alahssan said even though media in Ghana have played their role in exposing the challenges confronting educational sector, stakeholders need to show serious commitment in ensuring quality education in Ghana.

Professor Seidu who was speaking on the topic; Quality Education in senior high schools, the role of Old students as the guest speaker at 21st speech and prize given day of TAMASCO, said teachers not increasing their knowledge also contributes to the problems facing quality education in the country.

Professor Seidu Alhassan said quality education goes far beyond filling classrooms with students and formulating good educational policies without backing them with action.

Professor Seidu said regardless of the roles stakeholders have played in promoting quality education in Ghana, the picture of quality is worse especially, in the northern part of Ghana.

Professor Seidu Alhassan also expressed worry over students adopting names alien to their parents.

 

 

On the delay in releasing the feeding grants, professor Seidu said some schools in the northern region may have to be closed down if stringent measures are not put in place by government. 

Some headmasters according to professor Seidu fear to pass through some areas because of their indebtedness to suppliers and urged government assist the school management to reimburse their suppliers.

Professor Seidu Alhassan also expressed worry over students adopting names such as Shatta Bone, Shatta Kpang which are alien to their parents. He explained that, he has no problem with the names if only it has academic connotation such as Shatta of economics, Shatta of Mathematics and Shatta of English.
