The Student Representative Council (SRC) of the Tamale Polytechnic has petitioned the government through the Sagnarigu District Chief Executive and the chief of Gukpegu Naa Alhaji Abdulai Alhassan over the encroachment of the school land.
The SRC is calling on government and the Gukpe Naa to bring the encroachers to order. The SRC’s petition was triggered by the clearing of a piece of land for the construction of a new palace by the Choggu Naa.
The angry students wore red arm bans amidst demonstration along some principal streets of Tamale and later presented their petition to the District Chief Executive of Sagnarigu, Alhassan Mohammed Sorugudoo at his official residence.
They were holding placards some of which read “T-poly management do something about our land”, “Our land, our future” and “Chief, why Tamale polytechnic land.” The aggrieved students were led by their SRC president Adam Iddrisu Baba.
Presenting the petition to the Sagnarigu DCE, the SRC president said the student body will employ all legal means to stop and prevent the Choggu Naa and others who have planned to construct the palace on the land of the Tamale polytechnic.
The DCE for Sagnarigu, Alhassan Mohammed Sorugudoo urged the students to remain calm and assured that the relevant stakeholders will meet and find a solution to the problem.
The paramount chief of Tamale, Gukpe Naa Abdulai Alhassan also assured the students that their concerns will be addressed.
Mohammed Rashad Abdulai, the secretary to Gukpe Naa said the chiefs will not sit down and allow anybody to build on institutions land.
He added that the palace will sanction anyone in such act and urged the students to go back and concentrate on studies, while major stakeholders address the matter.
Meanwhile, when our news team contacted the Choggu Naa’s palace, they refused to comment on the matter.
