Tamale -Yapei road to close over slab fault

The Ghana Highway Authority and the National Road Safety Commission (NRSC) in the northern region are appealing to drivers and commuters on Tamale Kumasi road to drive with extra care especially when they reach Yapei Bridge.  

The commission and the high authority's appeal come in the wake of the ongoing maintenance work on that stretch. The maintenance was necessitated following a large hole which has developed in one of the slabs of decking of the Yapei Bridge with iron rods exposed.

The situation according to highway authority has weaken the slab causing it and other portions of bridge to vibrate when vehicles are passing through it.

A statement jointly issued in Tamale by the Northern Regional Road Safety Commission and highway authority and signed by the NRSC Manager, Alexander Ayatah stated that the situation needs immediate attention to prevent it from weakening the whole bridge.

The statement added that consultants and contractors in collaboration with NRSC and highway authority will carry out re-mechanical work on the bridge as a  temporary measure while they seek a permanent solution.

The letter also stated that Tamale Yapei road will be closed to all traffic on Saturday, 13th April 2013 from 9:00am to 12:00 noon to allow for the re-mechanical work to be executed.

It appealed to traveling public to bear with the situation and give maximum cooperation and understanding for the inconvenience it may cause them.
