One hundred and twenty (120) young girls have been charged with teaching others about the dangers of HIV and AIDS. The girls from three selected senior high schools (SHS) have been trained on HIV/AIDS risk by Youth Entrepreneurship and Social Advancement Center (YESAC), a local NGO based in Tamale.
Drawn from Kalpohini SHS, Dabokpa SHS and Tamale girls SHS in the Tamale metropolis, girls after their training would serve as peer educators in their schools and communities to educate both young and the elderly on the need to protect themselves against the deadly AIDS disease.
The three day peer education training was aimed at enhancing the knowledge of the sexually active young people’s awareness of the existence of HIV/AIDS and also to have in-depth knowledge of the risks and dangers of it.
Project Coordinator of YESAC, Miss Nancy Yeri, in an interview explained that the menace of HIV/AIDS in Ghana is on the quiet for a long time yet young people still engage in unprotected sexual activities. She therefore called for an end to stigmatization of people living with HIV and asked people to treat those with HIV like people suffering from malaria or high blood pressure in society.
