344 motor bikes arrested in Tamale for various traffic offenses

Three hundred and forty-four (344) motor bikes have been impounded by joint police, National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) and the Driver Vehicle licensing Authority (DVLA) within the Tamale metropolis today.

The motor bikes impounded includes 285 unregistered and 59 motorists not wearing helmet. The team also arrested 4 unregistered tricycles (motor king) and a yellow yellow tricycle. 

The exercise which took place within the northern regional police command lasted for about 4hours.  Owners of the bikes with valid custom papers were made register instantly with the DVLA at a fee of 280 Ghana cedis.

Briefing the media at the police headquarters, Northern Regional Police Commander, COP Mr Timothy Yoosa Bonga said the command will not prosecute the offenders but subsequent arrest will lead to prosecution.

 He explained that his outfit commence the exercise after several sensitization forums in some communities and at the chiefs and public places.

He was happy that after almost 4 hours, no opinion leader or politician called the command to release even a bike. The commander advised motorist to stop using fake number plates because they will be identified.

COP Yoosa Bonga told the media that DVLA within two weeks is providing the police a software that can detect fake number plates.

The exercise COP Yoosa said will be carried out to Christmas and new year.

The command he added plan meeting motor bikes dealers for possibility of the bikes registered at the buying point and helmets are also given.
