Kidnaper demands GHC 200,000 -ransom from victim’s family in Zabzugu

Eighteen (18) year-old herdsman Amidu Abdul Kadri has been remanded into prison custody by the Yendi circuit court presided over by Mr Anthony Aduku Aidoo for attempted kidnapping contrary to section 18 (1) and 89 of the criminal and other offences Act, Act 1960 (act29). 

The suspect is said to have committed the crime at Badoli near Zabzugu in the northern region. According to the facts of the case presented by Prosecution Detective Gariba Kwesi, a complainant Aliu Issah on October 23, 2023 reported at Maa Nayili, a community near Zabzugu that a Fulani herdsman residing at Maa threatened his life.

The complainant, the prosecution said, sent one Abass, a Fulani herdsman, to his elder brother to take care of his cattle.

 The accomplice, Detective Gariba Kwesi said met the accused person in Badoli community and planned with him to threaten and kidnap the complainant for a ransom. Detective Chief Inspector Gariba Kwesi, the suspect accomplice, Abass gave the complainant phone number to the accused person to carry out their plan of threat and kidnap.

The phone tracing of the suspect he said led to easy identification of Abass’s voice on the phone. On October 23,2023 at about 8am, Abass received a phone call from SIM who claimed to have been contracted to kill or kidnap Ali Issah.

 The accused, the prosecution said, demanded that the complainant should send one hundred thousand cedis (GHC 100,000.00) to him otherwise he will pay GHC 200,000.00.

The accused, detective Kwesi said, threatened the complainant not to inform his landlord Alidu Ibrahim who is the secretary to the Maa Naa. Officers of the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB), laid ambush and arrested the suspect in Zabzugu when he went to collect the ransom in Zabzugu.

He was lured through Kurikongo electoral area assemblyman, Shaibu Suleman, who acted as a MOMO merchant vendor. Accused in his investigation caution statement to the police admitted the offence and mentioned Abass who is currently at large as his accomplice.

After investigation, the accused person was charged with the offence and arraigned before Yendi district circuit. Secretary to Maa Nayili, Alidu Ibrahim narrated how they managed to trick the suspect and finally got him arrested.

The complainant Ali Issah told Zaa News Issahaku Abdulai the suspect harassed him with several calls for him to give him the money but he told him that he has no such amount of money.

‘I told him I don’t have money but he said if I don’t give him, he will kill me’ Ali Issah stated.   

 The case has been adjourned to November 8, 2023.
