The Sagnarigu Municipal Assembly have intensified efforts to get rid of filth within the municipality in compliance with Northern Region Minister directive to the various MMDAs to identified areas engulf with filth and clear them.
The assembly decision is also in line with the northern regional coordinating council recently launched sanitation program ‘’Operation Clean Northern Region’’ program. The minister during the launched May 20,2021 declared the last Saturday of every month as sanitation day.
Speaking to the media during the stakeholders, the Coordinating Director of the Sagnarigu Municipality, Al-hassan Z. Alhassan admitted the filthy nature of the municipality and assure that the assembly will used persuasion but will applied their sanitation bylaws to the latter on recalcitrant residents.
The assembly he said expects residents to clean their houses while the assembly also focus on the chocked gutters and heaps of refuse in designated places for dumping waste. He reminded people who think can do anything and get away with it to rethink because the security people will enforce the laws.
The enforcement he said should be the last resort but some people deliberately liter the environment and expect the assembly to clean it. Mr Alhassan reiterated that the assembly is devoting resources to carry out the exercise adding that its sanitation officer has been reminded to wake up on their job by visiting households to inspect the sanitation situation within the municipality.
The assembly he added is collaborating the Zoomlion Ghana limited implement Pay as you dump program at the designated places to prevent waste overflowing from the waste containers. On 29th, the assembly will target Choggu Mma Naayili and Sheshigu as the starting point and replicate in other areas.
The public jobs Manager at Zoomlion, Sulemana Haruna assured the stakeholders of the Zoomlion’s readiness s to assist the assembly with the necessary tools for the clean-up. assured stakeholders of assembly members readiness to support the exercise and expect same from community members.
Zoomlion he said in the past have supported individual assembly members to carrying out clean-up exercise in their own small ways in their electoral areas and hope that community members will show keen interest in keeping the communities clean.
The Chief of Garizegu Alhassan Yakubu who represented the paramount chief of Sagnarigu encouraged the people take the clean-up exercise very serious. He said even though the idea was good, the chiefs and chiefs were not consultant either by the regional coordinating council or the assembly before declaring 29th as a day marking the beginning of every last Saturday of every month.

The chief recounted how the assembly abandoned heaps of waste closer to the Sagnari Na’s palace after several appeals to the MCE felt on death ears and the chief had to find ways of clearing it.
