Severe rainstorm destroys property and renders 206 Zabzugu residents homeless

PhotoGrid_1458985867893 A severe rainstorm on Wednesday morning swept through the Zabzugu district in the northern region destroying properties and leaving two hundred and six (206) residents homeless, authorities said.

Officials said about twenty-eight (28) houses and two basic schools were destroyed. Some of the affected communities include Taasindo number one and Taasindo number two.

Mr. Zakaria Yahaya, the district NADMO coordinator told Zaa News that the displaced residents are currently staying with relatives. He expressed worry about the disaster and added that his outfit was working hard to assisted affected residents.

In addition, authorities said because of the destruction, they have been compelled to combine pupils from two schools in the district, the D/A primary school and the Nuriya primary school in Lainja Lugima electoral area in one class, a move that has adversely affected teaching and learning, officials added.

The assemblyman for the Lainja Lugima electoral area, Mr. Iddrisu Luqman appealed to the district assembly and NADMO to assist the schools get back on their feet for normal academic work to continue.

Mr. Mohammed Yussif Laabandoo, the district chief executive for Zabzugu, said the assembly is working with NADMO to get some relief items for affected residents. He described the incident as an emergency situation especially where pupils are being packed in one classroom.

Mr. Laabandoo indicated that the assembly was doing all it could to support the victims with roofing sheets and cement to reinstate the victims.
