3 Confirmed dead at Bunkpurugu in renewed ethnic clashes; residents flee to Togo


Renewed ethnic chieftaincy clashes between the Jamong and the Jafog in Bunkpurugu Township in the northern region have claimed three lives and destroyed 35 houses authorities said. Survivors reportedly fled to neighboring Togo.

imageResidents in the border town of Panatick were the first to flee after clashes escalated today in the township, which is about 15 kilometers from Bunkpurugu.

The Northern Regional Police Command Public Relations Officer, who confirmed the deaths to Zaa News, said two AK 47 rifles were retrieved through police intelligence. Persons responsible for the rifles, according to ASP Tetteh, are on the run.

Security personnel from other adjoining districts are helping the military and police already on the ground to deal with the situation.
